# Performance & Availability Monitoring

**Flumotion Smart Multi CDN** allows you to monitor your CDNs for both performance and availability.

Flumotion Smart Multi CDN monitors your services from multiple locations around the world, providing visibility into service performance and availability across different geolocations.

These monitors can also be used to make routing decisions when traffic is distributed across multiple CDNs. You can use them when you [create traffic policies](https://www.flumotion.com/docs/multiCDN/creating-a-traffic-policy/).

#### Monitoring URLs

Monitoring is performed on specific traffic resources.

You can configure URLs from your service to be used for monitoring. This is important because a specific resource may behave differently from the average depending on factors such as:

- Static vs. dynamic content
- Object size
- Connectivity to the Origin
- Account configuration

These resources are periodically checked for both **availability** and **performance**.

#### Monitoring Sources

**Flumotion Smart Multi CDN** uses data from multiple synthetic monitoring sources to evaluate performance.

The system periodically monitors the configured resource (i.e., URL). Each CDN provider configured for your service is checked independently.

These frequent checks allow the system to quickly identify and respond to availability issues while providing measurements based on the specific resources configured for the service.

The monitoring sources used by the system include:

- Cloud locations
- Flumotion Smart Multi CDN internal monitoring infrastructure
- Catchpoint

Flumotion Smart Multi CDN receives performance and availability data from these sources, aggregates the results, and determines service availability and performance for each geolocation.

#### Performance Monitoring

When you configure a **Performance Monitor**, the configured URL is measured using **Time to First Byte (TTFB)**.

TTFB includes the following components:

- **DNS time** – The time required to resolve the CDN CNAME.
- **TCP connect time** – The time required to establish a TCP connection.
- **TLS time** – The time required to establish a secure connection.
- **Wait time** – The time measured from sending the HTTP request until the first byte of the response is received.

You can view both the TTFB and the other measured components in your service's Performance Monitoring dashboard.

#### Availability Monitoring

When you configure an **Availability Monitor**, the configured URL is periodically checked to determine its availability.

Flumotion Smart Multi CDN verifies that the resource returns a successful response (i.e., an HTTP `2xx` status code).

A timeout of **3 seconds** is also applied. If fetching the resource takes longer than 3 seconds, the check is considered failed.

You can view the availability results in your service's Availability Monitoring dashboard.

#### Geographical Coverage

Flumotion Smart Multi CDN's internal monitoring infrastructure covers more than **70 countries and U.S. states**, with certain geolocations sampled from multiple sources (POPs).

To complement this geographical coverage, Flumotion Smart Multi CDN also uses **Catchpoint** as a monitoring source for measuring performance and availability.

Extended coverage can also be provided for specific geolocations that represent a significant portion of customer traffic.

#### Using Monitors in Traffic Policies

When configuring Traffic Policies, you can use:

- **Performance Monitors** to route traffic based on CDN performance.
- **Availability Monitors** to provide automatic failover between CDN providers.

More information about Traffic Policies can be found [here](https://www.flumotion.com/docs/multiCDN/traffic-policies-overview/).

#### Prerequisites

Before adding a Monitor to your service, you need to have the following:

**Flumotion Smart Multi CDN Service** – You can follow [these steps](https://www.flumotion.com/docs/multiCDN/steps-for-creating-a-service/) to create a service.
