# Origins Overview

An **Origin** is the location where your content is stored or hosted, such as an S3 bucket or another HTTP server. When you create a service, you are required to define at least one Origin.

After the service has been created, you can add additional origins and use them:

- As separate targets for different domains, paths, or patterns.
- As an **Origin Set**, where the same content is available from multiple locations to increase availability or enable load balancing.

Once an Origin has been defined, you can route traffic to it by creating a **Domain Route**.

#### Prerequisites

Before you start working with origins, make sure you have the following:

- **Flumotion Smart Multi CDN Service** – You can follow [these steps](https://www.flumotion.com/docs/multiCDN/steps-for-creating-a-service/) to create a service.
