HTTP Streaming on the iPhone, Live Content on The Move

Flumotion predicts that the use mobile video will increase in 2011

Windows Phone 7 – The rival

TheiPhone is becoming increasingly popular among your everyday day mobile phone user. It is much more than just a Smartphone; it can be made as personal as each user wants it to be.  Almost everybody wants one, and if they don’t, they are probably lying. This does beg the question of whether this is all just a trend that will end the second something new and unique is on the market or if the iPhone’s popularity is here for the long term.

Recently at the Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona, there have been numerous announcements regarding mobile devices said to ‘rival the iPhone’. Windows Phone 7 has been the biggest and most promising of these announcements and looks as if it could finally be Microsoft’s answer to the iPhone. Although it’s hard not to feel that they are simply playing catch up and Apple will continue to innovate, staying in front of the competitors. It entered the market offering more advanced features compared to what other Smartphones had at the time. The ball was dropped, and Apple did not hesitate in grabbing it with both hands.

Live Streaming via the iPhone

The streaming of live events directly to the iPhone is just one of the most recent possibilities given to us by the iPhone. It was not so long ago when the prospect of watching a live event would have meant sitting in front of your TV, resisting the need to move even at the most desperate moment, just to prevent missing even a slight second of the action (I´m sure all of us football fans know this feeling only too well.) Over the years we’ve been given more and more options for watching live events and this is just another.

Is it practical? Sure. There are of course many factors that will prevent it from being a complete solution for watching live video, such as battery life, screen size and social viewing. However, when it comes to that important game that you simply cannot miss yet find yourself struggling to get back and watch it, then I’m sure your iPhone would have just become your new best friend (that’s if it wasn’t already.)

With the support of HTTP streaming media now included with the latest version of the iPhone, we have been able to introduce live streaming capabilities into the Flumotion Streaming Platform . This now means that by using our Platform live content can be delivered directly to the iPhone. With the iPhone’s popularity it is important to use it to its full potential and this latest development in the Platform will help us achieve that.

The Future is mobile

Is it really a surprise to see that Apple, Google and Microsoft, who dominate the personal computer world, are now set to dominate the mobile world also? The fact that these companies are investing so much time and effort into these devices shows how big the future really is for mobile. With the constant growth and developments in mobile technology, we need to ensure that we are striving to offer the possibilities that these devices allow us.
